The most important part of the bridge structure is bridge bearing, which bears directly all the forces from the structure above & transmits the same to the supporting structure below. Basically the bridge bearings accommodates the changes in super structure under dynamic conditions such as longitudinal, lateral and rotational movement and also cater for Vertical and Horizontal ( longitudinal & lateral ) forces, generated due to various movements and loads.

Elastomeric Laminated bearing are made of multiple layers of rubber sandwiched with and bound to thin steel sheets, and then through vulcanization.Its vertical rigidity is sufficient to bear the perpendicular load and to shift the pressure reliably from the superstructure to the piers. Its elasticity is high enough to suit the rotation of the beam end.Its shear deformation is sufficient to cope with the horizontal displacement of the superstructure.It is structurally simple, easy for installation, maintenance and replacement, and, with a great saving of steel, it is quite cheap.This type of bearings is highly resistant against vibration and the shocking from the moving load to the span and pier of the bridge.

Application
Elastomeric bearings are used mainly for bridges and buildings. Elastomeric bearings can absorb horizontal movements in every direction and rotational movements around
every axis through elastic deformation, thereby allowing forces to be transferred safely from one component to another.
